Generally, root canal therapy is performed when a tooth is experiencing an infection. Teeth become infected as a result of extensive tooth decay that breaches the many layers of tooth enamel and damages the inner area of teeth known as the pulp. Teeth can also become infected if they recently sustained an injury that left the inner tooth exposed. If you experience severe discomfort in your tooth and you aren’t sure why, it’s time to visit our office for a detailed X-ray and examination. However, keep in mind that you don’t have to be in pain in order to need a root canal.
